- Bryan Lance Global Divide: Ryu Rising vol 1Peter Rodriguez's thrilling sci-fi novel Global Divide: Ryu Rising is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi story about the survival of humanity. Ryu is a teenager living in this world who is forcefully recruited into the military of the GWO or Global World Order. They believe that in order to bring humanity back to its former glory, they have to destroy the traits that led to the downfall, no matter who that means killing to get there. Ryu realizes his own morals are conflicted with his duties and by choosing to stand for what he believes in; he ties his fate to the fate of the earth. The short chapters of this book made it a quick and captivating read. I found myself getting fully immersed in the world that Rodriguez was building before my eyes with his words. I really liked the imagery that he used to bring his world to life, simple but clear. My favorite element of this book though was actually Ryu himself. With such a complex web of military, politics, and world destruction, it was really nice to have a character that still believed deeply in good. Despite the world that Ryu was raised in, he doesn't let any of it overrun his own moral compass. This strength of character made him really likable. I also like despite his world; in many ways, he is still a normal 17-year old. He likes to sleep, can be grumpy, and complains that the world isn't fair. This also made him more relatable and human, which was very important to eh success of this story. This is a super fun and engaging read. As someone who reads a lot of science fiction, I really enjoyed it, but I also think that it would appeal to readers of genres like post-apocalypse, military, and political.Read more
